I have no idea if any members of the Duke Lacross team really did rape that stripper at their party. According to the DNA collected, none of them touched her. What concerns me is the fact that "innocent until proven guilty" exists only in the actual criminal law suit and not in the university or in the media. How does Duke University have the right to suspend any members of the team before anyone is found guilty? Especially after the shocking news that no team members' DNA were matched to the victim. What if they are found to be innocent without a doubt? What if the case is dropped? Will the team still be suspended just for having a party? As for the media, it's a shame that somebody's reputation can be destroyed before it's proven that they did anything.
The other thing that bothers me is how oblivious the media is to how athletes act in college. It's like a big shock to them that male athletes treat girls like sex objects. Are you kidding me? Remember "7th Floor Crew"? The rap song made by Miami football players? "We gangbang hoes. That's what we do. Don't disrespect." Truth is, a lot of girls don't really seem to care either. I see girls walking around on campus that might as well be holding a sign for the athletes saying "Screw me, get me pregnant, pay me child support when you go pro." It's no secret to anybody, including the girls, that they're just sex objects for athetes. Wow, sholarship athletes are throwing crazy parties, having tons of sex and not going to class? That's breaking news.
Well, anyway, IF and that's a big IF, the Duke Lacrosse team is innocent, then it's a shame that right now I can't hear "Duke" or "Lacrosse" without thinking "rapists" because of all the publicity this has gotten. And OOPS - I just contributed to it.
