Calvin Klein was born on November 19th, 1942, in New York City. He was raised in a Jewish community, where as a teenager, he began to draw and sketch his clothing designs. After completing his course work at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, Klein went on to launch his clothing line in 1968 with friend Barry Schwartz. Calvin Klein's first big sale was $50,000 worth of merchandise to the Bonwit Teller department store. Soon after, the buzz began. Calvin Klein's famous designer jeans were launched within the next few years. His popular underwear line soon followed. Calvin Klein has hired models including a young Brooke Shields, Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg, and has been criticized for using young, thin models in his sexual advertisements. Calvin Klein entered the fragrance industry in the late 1980s with the successful Obsession and Eternity fragrances for men. The Calvin Klein clothing line now also includes swimsuits, glasses, watches, cosmetics and bedding.
